Adding an In-law Suite

Westside Remodeling

Are your in-laws up in years? Does your spouse want them to come live with you so they can get the care they need? Are your in-laws currently unemployed, in need of financial assistance, and hoping to move in with you? Is your home too small to accommodate these new residents? Why not add an in-law suite to your existing structure? An in-law suite provides the space and independence that your new roommates want with the privacy that you need.

Adding an in-law suite to your existing home is one of the easiest ways to accommodate a change in living circumstances that involves a multigenerational household. It’s essential to bring in experienced contractors to complete the work. You should hire professionals who can assist you with local regulations and subdivision requirements, especially since these can vary from one locale to the next.

No matter how you originally envision an in-law suite, it simply needs to be a separate living area that will accommodate one or two people within the home. Ideally, it should include a full private bathroom, a bedroom, a small kitchen, a den or living area, and a separate entrance, especially if these living arrangements are going to be for a prolonged period of time. At the very least, an in-law suite should have a bedchamber, private bath, and lots of closet space. However, if you value your personal privacy, installing a small kitchenette can provide the independence that both sets of residents can benefit from each day.

An in-law suite is generally best suited for the first level of a home, especially if one or more of the relatives is disabled, elderly, or infirm. If it is necessary to situate the in-law suit on an upper level of the home, the installation of an elevator or chairlift may be necessary to accommodate relatives who are living there. The garage, porch, den, recreation room, or backyard of the home may provide the best location for the construction of an in-law suite, particularly since some of the necessary support structures are already present. Alternatively, putting on an entirely new addition provides the best option for layout design.
