What Options Are There for Outdoor Decks?

May 23, 2012 by Westside Remodeling

Creating luxurious outdoor living space is simple. All you need is a new deck, a few chairs, and some decorative plants. You can put in an outdoor deck anywhere that you have enough space. Popular outdoor deck choices include above-ground pool deck, in-ground pool deck, and patio decks.

A good building contractor can help you with all of the planning stages as well as the actual implementation of your deck plan. Whether or not you have a custom deck design or you are planning to go with something simple, it’s important to decide whether or not you want a wood, composite, or vinyl deck.

While wood decks are attractive and functional, they also require regular maintenance and upkeep to keep them in good shape. If they are not properly kept up, wood decks can rot in addition to losing their attractiveness.

Composite deck construction typically lasts longer than wood decks. However, composite decks still require some maintenance and upkeep since moisture can become a problem that leads to a weakening of the structure.

Typically, vinyl decks feature surfaces that resemble textured wood grain. Little maintenance is required to keep this style of deck in good shape. Vinyl decks often have an embossed surface to provide a slip-resistant façade.

Decking made from recycled plastic can provide a natural wood look that is just as gorgeous as the real thing but without the maintenance. Plastic decking does not absorb moisture, so it does not suffer from premature deterioration.

If you already have an existing deck that you are considering having refinished or repaired, you should evaluate its condition first. If the existing deck needs more than a 40% overhaul, you may as well have a new deck built. It will most likely last longer.

When you create your outdoor deck plan, don’t forget to think about optional elements such as deck railings, deck enclosure, steps, and ramps. You may also want to consider built-in bench seats, tables, or planters.
