When contemplating a remodeling project, the length of time it will take is an important consideration. The answer varies depending on the job size, if structural work is involved and how busy the construction industry is. It also depends on the homeowners’ availability to meet for planning and selections and their how fast they can make decisions.
It is important to note the so called “reality” television shows which portrays kitchens and bathrooms being fully gutted and remodeled in a week have given a lot of people unrealistic expectations regarding a timeline.
Customers often ask if we can have their remodel done in a few weeks because they have company coming to stay for a while or they are hosting a big a big party or holiday celebration. While we try our best to accommodate their timelines, we suggest they not rush their project because remodeling is an important undertaking. Family and friends will be long gone while the homeowner lives in their new space for years to come. A successful remodel takes an ample amount of time to design and build. You want to LOVE your kitchen or bathroom remodel when finished- with no regrets of what you could have done when you check out your neighbor’s new remodel.
The following is an approximate time line for construction of an average project after the design phase is completed.
|Small Scale Kitchen Remodel||3 to 4 weeks|
|Medium Kitchen Remodel||6 to 8 weeks|
|Major Kitchen Remodel||8 to 10 weeks|
|Powder Bathroom||2 to 4 weeks|
|Hall/Guest Bathroom||6 to 7 weeks|
|Master Bathroom||6 to 8 weeks|
|Outdoor Living Space||6 to 10 weeks|
|Addition||8 to 12 weeks|
|Whole House Remodel||4 to 6 months|
We follow the description of the design, permit and construction process will give you a good understanding of the steps involved in the remodeling process:
» Design Phase-3 to 12 weeks
During this phase, we will meet with you to understand your vision, listen to your needs and check out the areas involved. We then work together to formulate a plan, design a layout, determine a budget range and select all the materials for the project. The selection phase may include shopping trips for tile, appliances, plumbing and light fixtures. And while we have a wide selection of cabinetry, countertop and flooring samples here in our showroom, we usually need to have custom samples ordered which can take a couple weeks to arrive.
Once everything is decided, selected, and planned, we calculate all the expenses for the job and prepare a construction contract which will include a complete description of the scope of work plus general disclosures and provisions.
» Permits Process -1 to 8 weeks
Upon approval of the Construction Contract, we must file for permits. Some projects require HOA and/or structural engineering approval. If the Department of Building and Safety becomes overloaded, like they were after the recent fires, your project may take extra time to be reviewed.
» Construction Phase- 4 weeks to 8 months
Once permits are obtained, we will order all materials for the job with cabinets taking the most time, approximately 6-8 weeks. We will begin demolition and then progress through each stage of the construction process in its proper order. Many stages require drying time and the passing of city inspection.
And in the remodeling business, something unexpected may arise and cause a delay. Mold or rot might be found when we open the walls, materials may be delayed or arrive damaged and a heavy rainstorm can put an exterior project on a brief hold.
As you can see, there is a lot to the remodeling process which is why it can take longer than some people expect. We promise to make every effort to complete your project as soon as possible -without cutting corners- so your remodel is beautiful, high quality and brings you joy for many years.
