Erasing The Barriers: Kitchens Without Walls

Westside Remodeling

One of the advantages of living in Southern California is the wonderful weather we enjoy throughout the year. When we watch the news reports of snow drifts taller than people in New England, it’s not hard to understand why homeowners would want to stay nice and cozy inside their warm homes, protected from the outside elements. But the weather we have calls for homes that erase the boundaries between the inside and outside.

With new construction techniques and new products on the market, achieving this becomes more practical every day. Even if your home wasn’t originally designed to have a seamless transition to the outside, thoughtful design and skilled craftsmen can make this a reality for you.

Over the past decades the typical home was built with a kitchen inside and a deck or patio built outside connected by a French door to the home’s living area. Cooking on the patio or deck was limited to barbecuing on the grill, and there was always the endless procession between the patio and kitchen, taking food out and dirty dishes in for washing.

In the past few years, the trend has moved toward homes that blur this distinction with large, vanishing walls of glass between these two areas and a full set of kitchen appliances also on the outside. In the outdoor portion the appliances are all constructed to withstand the weather—and there are now many excellent products available for this purpose. During the party when the weather’s nice, the walls disappear and the group moves outside to enjoy the fresh air without requiring the people doing the cooking and clean up to isolate themselves inside.

Does this sound inviting? Stop by the Westside Remodeling showroom and discuss your dreams with one of our designers. As a Design/Build Remodeler, the professionals at Westside know how to take into account all of the practical details—such as determining which are structure-bearing walls or figuring out which materials will stand up to the elements. We will incorporate them into a design that enhances the architecture of your home, meets your budget, and fits your lifestyle.
